FM Approvals has been notified by Detcon Inc. of a potential safety concern involving FM Approved Detcon model TP-524D Solid State H2S Sensors manufactured between May 2011 and June 2017.

Product Identity: TP-524D Solid State H2S Sensor

Description: The Detcon model TP-524D H2S Sensor was approved as a Stationary Single Channel 4-20 mA Toxic Gas Detector suitable for installation as explosion-proof in Class I, Division 1, Groups B, C, and D Hazardous (Classified) Locations by FM Approvals.  Detcon made an unauthorized product modification involving changes to the sensor formulation.

Detcon has informed FM Approvals of an unauthorized change to the sensor formulation instituted by Detcon in May 2011. As a result of the formulation change, the TP-524D H2S Sensor will not perform as required if exposed to low levels of H2S for more than 10 minutes.  The sensor will lose sensitivity. This results in the sensor indicating a lower level of gas present than is actually present and will not go into alarm when the threshold level has been reached.

FM Approval Status:  FM Approved

Hazard Involved:  Detcon model TP-524D Solid State H2S Sensors manufactured between May 2011 and June 2017 will not perform as required if exposed to low levels of H2S for more than 10 minutes. This results in the sensor’s inability to go into alarm and notify safety personnel when alarm threshold levels of H2S are present.

These sensors are not considered FM Approved. Users should contact the Detcon representative above for sensor replacement.
