IECEx

The IECEx Scheme is administered by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for the recognition of electrical equipment used in hazardous-classified locations.

The IECEx System comprises several systems. Currently, the United States only participates in the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme. FM Approvals does so as both an Ex Certification Body (ExCB) and an Ex Testing Laboratory (ExTL).

The IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme

This IECEx Scheme is a certification scheme covering equipment that meets the requirements of International Standards—generally the IEC 60079 series of standards prepared by IEC Technical Committee 31.

The IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme can provide a single Certificate of Conformity (CoC) that requires manufacturers to successfully complete the following:

Testing and assessment of samples for compliance with standards resulting in a Test and Assessment Report (ExTR)
Assessment and auditing of manufacturers facilities resulting in a Quality Assessment Report (QAR)
Ongoing surveillance audits of manufacturers facilities

Currently, only Australia, New Zealand and Singapore accept the IECEx CoC as meeting all of the National requirements for Ex Certification.

For other countries that do not accept the IECEx CoC, but require national certification or approval, a “fast-track” process can be used to achieve national certification. This is achieved by way of FM Approvals, who is also an IECEx ExCB, accepting an IECEx ExTR prepared for the equipment to support the national certification.

For Ex equipment manufacturers seeking an IECEx CoC, FM Approvals can prepare the ExTR, conduct the QAR and issue the CoC.
FM Approvals can also assist manufacturers that:

already have an ExTR and need FM Approval of the product for the United States or Canada
already have a QAR and need an ExTR
already have an ExTR and need a QAR
already have an ExTR and ATEX Certification for Europe

A worldwide presence and globally accepted certification mark enable FM Approvals to offer manufacturers with FM Approved products a single source for certification and direct access to global markets.

ATEX
FM Approvals is an ATEX-notified body within the European Union and can undertake the assessment, testing and certification of your products against the standards under the ATEX equipment directive.
Canada Certifications
FM Approvals is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) as a testing and certification organization.
Central Stations
FM Approvals' Central Station Placarding Program can provide an easy method of identifying that a building's fire alarm system is installed, tested, monitored and maintained according to NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code requirements.
CPR
FM Approvals is accredited as a notified body to test and certify products under the European Union Construction Products Regulations (CPR).
Functional Safety Assessment and Certification
FM Approvals' functional safety certification underscores your product's quality and reliability, signifies that your safety-related product or system meets the stringent requirements of national and international standards and gives your customers the assurance they need to make an informed purchasing decision.
Private Labeling/Trade Agent
The FM Approvals Private Labeling/Trade Agent process enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of FM Approved products to enter into a private label agreement with someone else and retain the FM Approvals' certification.
Specification Testing
The specification-testing program tests a product for a single performance characteristic to a standardized industry test. The results may be used by authorities having jurisdiction to confirm compliance to a recognized standard.
